Webmail - Introduction

Webmail is a concept most Internet users are comfortable with -- it's a web page you go to in order to access your mail.

All of our accounts have webmail included by default.  If we're hosting your mail service, then you can access webmail.

Webmail - Access

You'll see specific links in your control panel, but the general rule is if you point your web browser to mail.<yourdomain.com> then you will see a screen that offers a number of options, the last three of which include:

  • Change your email password
  • Use the IMP webmail system
  • Use the SQWebMail system

The change password option allows your users to change their own e-mail password to something only they know.

IMP is a fairly popular, full-featured web client.  This is probably most people's default webmail choice.

SQWebMail is Squirrel Mail, a much simpler mail client that many prefer for its lack of features.

You can use both, interchangeably.

Webmail - Most common complaint

Please remember that your login to webmail is your entire e-mail address: you@<yourdomain.com>.  Attempting to log in with simply your username will fail.

Webmail - Interoperation with other mail clients

Mail clients like Outlook and Outlook Express generally access mail via "pop3," which is a protocol that downloads messages to the user's machine and deletes them from the server.  Webmail, on the other hand, uses IMAP which keeps messages stored on the server itself.

The general rule here is this: you can access webmail and still get messages via Outlook.  If you download messages into Outlook, then it's probably no longer accessible from webmail.

This is something you can change by telling Outlook to use IMAP instead of pop3, but if you do this your mail messages will contribute to your overall web usage -- remember than many people with years of e-mail have gigabytes stored on their local computers.  Using IMAP requires discipline to keep the number of stored messages under control.
